- A contest was held to find a design for the proposed Capitol building.
- Dr. Thornton's drawing caught the eye of one of the judges, George Washington. Thornton won the $500 prize and was put in charge of construction.

- Washington laid the cornerstone.

- 1800: The first Congress began its sessions in the Capitol's only completed wing.

- 1811: House and Senate wings of the Capitol were virtually finished.

- 1814: In August, British troops set fire to the Capitol.

- 1829: Restoration and rebuilding completed.

- 1844: Samuel F. B. Morse demonstrates the telegraph for a congressional committee.

- 1862: Capitol rotunda used as a hospital for men wounded in the Second Battle of Manassas and the Battle of Antietam.

- 1863: Thomas Crawford's statue of "Freedom" was placed on top of the Capitol dome, completing the building's enlargement.
