  2. Designed by Dr. William Thornton. 
  3.  
  4. A contest was held to find a design for the proposed Capitol building.  
  5. Dr. Thornton's drawing caught the eye of one of the judges, George Washington.  Thornton won the $500 prize and was put in charge of construction.
  6.  
  7. Construction began on September 18, 1793, when President George 
  8. Washington laid the cornerstone.
  9.  
  10. Important Dates:

  12. 1800: The first Congress began its sessions in the Capitol's only completed wing.
  13.  
  14. 1811: House and Senate wings of the Capitol were virtually finished.
  15.  
  16. 1814: In August, British troops set fire to the Capitol.
  17.  
  18. 1829: Restoration and rebuilding completed.
  19.  
  20. 1844: Samuel F. B. Morse demonstrates the telegraph for a congressional committee.
  21.  
  22. 1862: Capitol rotunda used as a hospital for men wounded in the Second Battle of Manassas and the Battle of Antietam.
  23.  
  24. 1863: Thomas Crawford's statue of "Freedom" was placed on top of the Capitol dome, completing the building's enlargement.
